Our Locksmiths’ Top Tips To Keep Your Property Secure

Fitting A New Lock

One of the first lines of defence for your home is your locks. They’re designed to keep intruders out. Good locks are hard to tamper with, which is usually enough of a deterrent to keep criminal activity at bay, particularly in busy areas. However, unfortunately this won’t always be the case. To reduce the likelihood of a burglar tampering with your locks or your home, we’ve used our locksmiths’ top tips to create this security guide.

Change The Locks

If you’ve moved into a new property, the first thing you should do is change the locks. There’s never any guarantee that the previous tenant or owner doesn’t still have access to a key, and you can’t be sure whether there are copies of those keys lost or in the wrong hands. Therefore, the best thing to do is to fit a new lock with keys you can keep track of.

Any lock that you fit should meet the British Standards. This is important because most home insurance companies will void your policy otherwise. Thankfully, all of the locks that ASAP Wales fit will meet these standards, meaning they are incredibly robust and difficult to tamper with.

Mind Your Keys

Never give a key to someone you can’t trust. As a general rule, our locksmiths recommend having a key for each resident of the home and one extra key for a trusted friend, neighbour or family member. Never leave a spare key outside. Even if you think you’ve found the perfect hiding spot, a would-be intruder probably has as well. Leaving a key hidden outside your home will invalidate your home insurance and leave your home vulnerable.

Additional Security Features

To further reduce the likelihood of burglars tampering with your locks, we recommend adding a few extra security features. Motion-activated floodlights which illuminate the front door are a great deterrent, as no criminal wants to be lit up while attempting to break a lock. You can also install security cameras or invest in a camera doorbell.

How To React To A Burglary

If you think you’ve been burgled, there’s a few things you should do. Call the police straight away, preferably from a secure location. There’s no guarantee that the intruder isn’t still on the property, so it could be dangerous for you to remain in the building. Don’t touch anything, as this could damage vital evidence.

Once the police have done everything they need to do, you’ll want to call in a locksmith. The locksmiths will provide you with a quote for a new lock and can recommend additional security measures to help prevent a burglary happening again.
